The lips are one of the universal signs of beauty no matter what culture you come from. Lip embellishments and cosmetics which are meant to draw attention have dated back for centuries. The sell of lipstick did not decline even during the great depression, if that tells you something. Lips are one of the most popular areas for us to treat but no two sets of lips are the same so if we want to give our patients a natural result, we really have to assess each person individually and develop a customized treatment plan and product that is perfect for each of them.
The lips decline and age just like the rest of our face, they get wrinkles, lose definition, get smaller and lose moisture faster. We usually have a loss of support around the mouth as well due to underlying bone, dentition, muscle, elastin, collagen, and fat changes. We sometimes get a downturn to the corner of the mouth, the area between our nose and upper lip gets longer and visible lines can appear around the mouth and at the upper lip. As you can see, deterioration of the lip happens for several different reasons.
We assess several things when we are coming up with a lip augmentation plan for you. Volume, Height, the Border, your unique Anatomy and the surrounding tissue. The first thing we do is check volume, symmetry and proportion. Your upper lip should never be bigger than your bottom lip. They can be the same size or the bottom lip can usually be twice as big if that is what the patient desires and it fits with their anatomy and structure, however, ethnic considerations have to be taken into account as African American lips usually tend to look best when the upper and lower lip are the same size. We also have to assess the lips projection from your profile view, you may look amazing from the front view but you will look like a duck from the side if we don’t take all of your anatomy into consideration.
We will also make you move your lips before we inject, during injections and after injections, why you ask? Because we are creating moving art. You will be eating, drinking, talking and your lips need to look amazing no matter what you are doing. Be prepared to give us a full smile and a kissy face several times during your appointment. The first thing we like to give back to an aging lip is its defining border. There is nothing worse than red lipstick bleeding up into wrinkles above your lip. Once we put this border back, it always looks natural and well defined. We will replace volume and change the height of the lip if necessary after treating the border. We will assess the area above the lip for wrinkles and volume loss, and we may use a combination of dermal filler, subcision and a neurotoxin such as Botox to correct any deficits we see. We will also assess the downturn at the corners of your mouth if necessary and will either recommend dermal filler for support around the mouth or we can use a neurotoxin to relax the muscle that pull down the corners of your mouth.
